Workshop Description: This workshop focuses on the development of therapeutic skills for mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) as developed in Mindfulness-Based Symptom Management (MBSM). The foundational concepts of mindfulness - body, emotions, sensations, and thinking - will be explored as an integrated model of intervention. The three elements of mindfulness interventions – distress tolerance, over-identification of the constructed self, and discernment of pain and suffering – will be examined as the underpinnings of MBSM. To assist in motivating and sustaining practice by offering a pragmatic framework that allows for behavioural change, the Five Skillful Habits are used as a values-congruence practice for clients to clarify areas of challenge in their practice. The four foundations of mindfulness intertwine with the Five Skillful Habits to form an intuitive and user-friendly self-directed program for clients. The inquiry protocols will be practiced, helping the clinician cultivate the client’s awareness of their experiential process and increase their distress tolerance, openness to alternative perspectives of self-identification, and understanding of the causes of suffering as different from the experience of pain. This workshop is open to clinicians interested in learning about mindfulness interventions and those who wish to refresh their understanding of the therapeutic applications of mindfulness approaches. |
