Workshop Description:

This workshop will be divided into two parts. The first, presented by Dr. Ghayda Hassan, will overview the main theoretical perspectives in cultural psychology, and discuss the main methodological and ethical challenges in assessment and intervention with culturally diverse populations. This presentation will also address issues relevant to ethnic minorities, immigrant, and refugee populations such as barriers to accessing care, issues of power and neutrality, and provide some recommendations on ensuring culturally safe interventions. Illustrations and examples will specifically focus on Syrian refugees.

The second, a panel discussion led by Drs. Andrew Ryder, Anusha Kassan, and Ada Sinacore, will use cases and examples to illustrate the myriad potential challenges of, and competencies required for, providing effective care for diverse cultural groups.  They will draw on their collective experience in clinical and counselling psychology to discuss effective care as it relates to topics such as: immigration, migration, trauma, faith, (bi)cultural identity, gender, and sexuality.

Note: Material will be presented at an introductory level.
