Workshop Description:

The rapidly changing career situation requires career counsellors to note changes in the world of work and to adapt their discipline to embrace change. It is the task of career counsellors to help clients deal with repeated career-related transitions. A rethink of theoretical and conceptual frameworks for interpreting career-related behaviour and for planning intervention in ever-changing contexts is needed. Career counselling is no longer perceived as a linear process aimed at helping clients find ‘jobs’ for the rest of their career-lives.

Attendees will learn how the traditional career counselling approach compares to the narrative approach. While acknowledging the value of 20th century approaches for 21st century career counselling practice, the value of present-day career counselling theories lies in their ability to enable clients to accept personal authorship of their career-life stories, become agents in their personal development, and help them find meaning and a sense of purpose in their work-lives.

Building on Self- and Career Construction Theory and emphasizing reflecting and reflexivity in career counselling, the workshop will show attendees how to integrate the outcomes of the Career Interest Profile (a qualitative career life- and career counselling-related instrument that enables career counsellors to identify clients’ major career–life themes) and the Maree Career Matrix (a twofold quantitative measure of career interests and self-estimates of confidence in aptitudes to follow certain careers) to facilitate contemporary career counselling to individuals and in group-based contexts. Attendees’ theory base in career counselling will be advanced to one that is more holistic, contextual and multicultural..

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Understanding the rationale behind and need for implementing an integrated, qualitative+quantitative approach to career counselling, career development and career decision making
  2. Being able to administer two newly-developed career counselling instruments; namely the Maree Career Matrix (MCM) and the Career Interest Profile
  3. Being able to administer integrated career counselling to individuals and in group-based contexts to help clients uncover their interests, career values, establish their career-life identity, and identify their major life themes
  4. Being able to help clients integrate and triangulate their scores (generated by the MCM) and career-life stories (generated by CIP)
  5. Being able to help clients (re-)discover a sense of self-respect, purpose and meaning in their career-lives
